What if you could not read the holiday greeting that your friend sent you?

Recently one of the volunteer Literacy tutors told about giving a birthday card to the adult student who she tutors.  It was the first year they were meeting together and the tutor read the card aloud to her student.  The tutor was very excited to tell that when she presented the birthday card to her student this time, the student read it all by herself!  I've been reflecting upon how much joy I derive from reading the holiday greetings that come my way during this season and I have asked myself, What if I could not read these cards and notes that friends and family have sent me?  The Literacy Council helps adults read everything from a greeting card to the instructions for filling out a much needed form for their child's school.  This holiday season I am grateful to know how to read and to be involved in empowering adults in Cabarrus County to read and write!!!
